This beautiful waterfall is located on the commune of Oguni, a few kilometers from Mount Aso, on Kyûshû. In the heart of an enchanting setting, this small waterfall of 20 metres wide and 10 metres high can be seen and photographed from all angles, including from the back. A very pleasant little stopover!

1Getting to the Nabegataki Waterfall

To get there, it is best to use your GPS with the coordinates shown below. On the spot, a recent parking lot is available to park right next to the waterfall.  The access is open from 9am to 5pm.

2The path to the waterfall

Then, a beautifully paved path starts a light descent for a few meters, then wooden stairs take over to take us to the water's edge. From here, the waterfalls open up. Formed several thousand years ago following an eruption of Mount Aso, they fit perfectly in the middle of a decor of moss and dense vegetation. Depending on the period, the flow is more or less strong and may even freeze in winter.

3The last passage of the Nabegataki falls

A path allows you to get close to it, and passes behind the waterfall to reach the opposite bank. The exposure of the waterfall in its rather dark environment makes it possible to make very beautiful pictures. Photographers will be delighted!

About us

We are Sandrine and Flo, French thirty-somethings. In 2019 we quit everything to live our dream, become nomads and travel around the world. We left with our baby, Lena, who was only 5 months old at the time. After a first trip around the Pacific Ocean by plane and a long 3 months stay in Hawaii, we left to discover Iceland for 3 months on board our 4WD pickup truck and truck camper. Then we continued our adventure in North America.

Today, if we can continue this adventure, it is above all thanks to our blog, Smartrippers! We created it one day in 2016, with the desire to share our good travel tips, without thinking that it would lead us there! We have developed it a lot over the years and have become experts on our 3 favorite destinations: Hawaii, Iceland and the American West. We now guide you to these destinations to help you plan the trip of your dreams!
